In NLP we know that success doesn’t exist. That’s not to say that you cannot be successful. It simply means that success is a nominalization, a concept not a thing. It’s an idea before the mind that only you can validate.
While the trappings of success like a shiny new car, large house or beautiful family can be visible for all to see. Success is none (or all) of these things. Success cannot be put in your pocket or carried around in a wheelbarrow. Success will be different for everyone and only you know what it means for you.
So what are you working for? The word ‘work’ is an interesting one too. Close your eyes say the word into yourself, what images do you get? What feelings? What thoughts? For most people ‘work’ conjures a sense of graft or striving or of effort.
Work, like success does not exist. It’s an idea before the mind, a label we put on the place we go or the things we do in order to achieve the ‘trappings’ of success. ‘Work hard and you’ll get success.’ Can anyone else see what’s wrong with the idea of spending most of our waking lives doing something that doesn’t exist in pursuit of a nominalization that doesn’t exist either? Yet people are literally killing themselves in the pursuit of this non-entity, and I’m afraid it’s us Scots who are to blame, for before Calvinism the world really was a happier place, it’s official, the guardian says so.
So when will you be successful?
Complete the sentence, ‘I’ll be successful when…’ repeat this 3 times with 3 different outcomes. Now notice your answers, are they material? Or are they nominalisations, or are they states of being?
Here’s your exercise; For your material outcomes. Ask yourself ‘what would I do if I didn’t need the money?’ I don’t mean packing in your job and sailing round the world. Which decisions would you make differently everyday if money or the ‘trappings’ was not the driver? What would you really like to be, do or have? What result would you really love to create? Each time you ask yourself (and answer) one of these questions your are setting your intention and your direction, and telling your unconscious mind what to pay attention to.
‘One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree, ‘which road do I take? She asked, His response was a question ‘where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know’ Alice answered ‘then,’ said the cat ‘it doesn’t matter.’
Lewis carol – from ‘Alice in wonderland’
Can you now imagine letting go of the external validation and not being trapped by ‘success?’ Let’s find out what you really want… till our paths cross again, have fun and enjoy the journey.
