Ok I’ll confess I pinched that line from a song – It’s a band called Linkin Park if you’re interested. But I think it’s brilliant and exactly how lots of us are in the world… The veneer that the outside world sees is very different from the real you on the inside. It’s often this imbalance that causes us more pain in the long run.

How many times have you had a crap day at work, kept it together all day in the face of whatever’s been thrown at you and then hit the takeaway or the wine or the chocolate as soon as you’re home? We’ve all done it, me included… I made a mistake when I started to get involved in the world of personal development, at first I used the techniques I’d learned to almost immunize myself from ‘life’ - if something bad happened I'd quickly use one of my new ‘cunning mind tricks’ and change it so that it didn’t bother me… I remember to my absolute shame organizing my father’s funeral and telling anyone who asked that I was ‘fantastic’, the buzz word of the particular self appointed self help ‘guru’ I was into at the time.

Can you imagine? Well I’m pleased to say that I’ve changed a lot in the last ten years and have learned that the secret of the 'cunning mind tricks' is not in the ability they give to block out the world but in the ability they give you to be ok ‘in’ the world.

It’s not that I don’t get stressed anymore or that bad things don’t happen to me but I have learned that, whatever happens, I can still be ok… There is one wonderful little word that makes it easier AND you’ve just learned it.

AND… the whole world may be going to hell…AND… I’m still alright. My boss is stressing me out, the girl in accounts is being a cow to me AND I’m still alright.

You see we often frame things in our minds as an 'either/or' equation and wait for things to be calm or in harmony before we give ourselves permission to feel good. It’s not like that, our brains can be far more clever than 'either/or' if we allow them… Please get used to using that one little word AND enjoy losing weight with a new sense of wellbeing in the process.
