What it is you want from Life?

It’s a question that starts off a ranting in your head… “What do I want?  Is it what I want or what my mother, lover, brother wants’?  I know what I don’t want that’s for sure…” and many more!  This short article is to make things a little easier for you as I am going to guide you through the process – are you ready?

For the purpose of our session I need you to agree to some conditions;  I want you to create a space where you can take time for you; no interruptions (phones – mobiles and landlines, little people, big people, dogs, cats etc), are comfortable (a comfy chair, warm drink) and a large pad and your favourite writing implement.  Ready?

I’m quite serious about the above – just sitting reading this and thinking is not going to do it today.  Take some time out for you – this is your life and this half an hour is for you, a lesson in taking time for you.

For the purpose of this exercise I want you to start writing about how your life is and what you want in it.  Start with the three big areas, work/career, home and relationships.  Are you doing what you want to do?  Are you living where you want to live? Are in you in a relationship you want to be in?  Don’t worry if you can only think of what you do not want – write that down too!  It’s all good stuff.

Once we have a list of wants and ‘don’t’ wants we can then start creating.  Write out a new list and only put in the wants.  Take the ‘don’t’ wants and ask yourself this, ‘If I don’t want this, then what do I want?’  For example, if you have written ‘I don’t want to live in the city’ this is a great place to start thinking about where you would like to live or, even better, the ideal place for you – the place of your dreams. Is it by the sea or in the country, in a town or in a village, in a house or a flat, with one bedroom or five, within half an hour of your parents or at least an hour and a half?  Then do the same thing with all the ‘don’t’ wants’.  The list should be very long by now!

The only rule I want to impart here is that this is a fun exercise.  If you find yourself taking things very seriously stop!  Take a note of what changed and agree to come back at another time and continue the process.  You will find that when you train your mind to think intentionally, ways of getting what you want come more easily. That way you can start creating the life you want, with ease and clarity.

Change can be easy and fun – you just have to create it that way.

Till next time, have fun!

Kerry, your Curious Coach
