They are a vital part of a healthy, balanced diet.  They are required for a huge range of bodily functions, from fueling your brain to providing energy for your workouts and a whole lot more. Many people assume that large quantities of carbs will give them endless energy and so many people will pile their plates high to keep their energy up, but this is not true, too much carbohydrates will leave you feeling bloated and sluggish and if your body has more carbs than it needs they will be stored as fat.


By eating small portions of the right kind of carbohydrates you will get the energy you need and raise your metabolism. A good indicator is usually a palm full. 

A good trick is to fill your plate with salad and veg, by the time you have finished munching your way through it all you will feel full as well as get lots of vitamins and minerals. 

When choosing your carbs such as rice, pasta and potatoes, try to stick to wholegrain options such as brown rice, brown pasta and potato options such as sweet potatoes. All of these contain a low glycemic index (low gi) which will keep you fuller for longer.
